Sheldon and Ty tell the story:

  • Ty Kalklosch (Founder)

It was late 2009 and I kept getting calls from this guy named Sheldon. We were relatively off the radar, which was the intention.

  • Sheldon Lewis

At the time I was living in San Francisco. A few days before my rent was due I found myself emptying every drawer in my house trying to find my checkbook to pay the rent. I thought to myself, it’s 2009, I’m living in the technology epicenter of the world and it’s crazy that I still have to write a check every month to pay my rent.

  • Ty

We had been growing at triple-digit numbers when Sheldon called, but we weren’t even scratching the surface. At the time, over 80% of the U.S. was still paying their rent with a check.

  • Sheldon

The next day I Googled “pay your rent online,” found PayLease and started cold-calling them.

  • Ty

My Co-Founder (Yann Phung) and I weren’t necessarily looking for capital at the time. We were bootstrapped, profitable, and growing fast, but I really liked and trusted Sheldon and the firm he was with at the time (Mainsail Partners). We were first-time entrepreneurs and Mainsail had a great reputation for helping companies take their business to the next level. You could tell they were also just really good guys.

  • Sheldon

Ty and I immediately connected. I should rephrase that: We immediately connected after he ignored my first five calls.

  • Ty

Sheldon felt like a part of the team from the start, but after a few years of working with us from the Mainsail side, we were finally able to convince him to come join the team.

  • Sheldon

I really enjoyed working at Mainsail but thought it would only make me a better investor if I had true operating experience. I thought I could add value and really enjoyed everyone there, so I packed up my life in San Francisco and moved down to San Diego – rough move I know.

  • Ty

Sheldon joined the Senior Executive team and ran Corporate Development and Business Development for PayLease for over four years, through two sale process, and one acquisition. We were able to grow revenue by over 15x while he was involved in the Company. He had a big impact on our success.

  • Sheldon

I was fortunate enough to work with Ty and the team for seven years in total and enjoyed every minute of it. Ty turned into more than a colleague. He turned into a very close friend. For the record, I still like to prank cold-call him every now and then to keep him on his toes.
